Ready for Our Close-ups...

Eating Lessons

The puppies are having private lessons on how to eat their first (semi-) solid food--a soupy mix of organic goat's milk, organic whole yogurt, and Wellness canned puppy food.  At first, they would only take it by sucking it off of a finger,  progressing to sucking the edge of the saucer.  After some trial and error though, most will lick the saucer almost clean. (Though a considerable volume ends up on them!)

They keep trying to get their paws right into the food, like they do when they are nursing, as if that would make it come out faster.

As quite a lot of food ends up on the pups, Lola is more than willing to clean their faces after each meal

Puppy Action

The puppies are awake for longer spells now and have started mouthing each other in play-biting and trying to push each other down.

But it is still only about 5 minutes of activity and then back to sleep!

Getting Rowdy Already

I See You

Liesel

Their eyes are all open now, although most still seem to navigate by smell. These guys are hungry all the time. Lola is eating 3-to-4 times her normal amount and feeding them every couple of hours.  When she is not on the spot soon enough the squeaking starts!  We are supplementing mom's kibble with cooked chicken, egg yolks, or puppy food.  She is doing a great job as the pups have on average tripled their birth weights in less than three weeks.  They had their tiny little claws trimmed with an infant nail clipper earlier this week as there were tiny scratches appearing all over Mom's belly!

Someone's Peeking

It is surprising to be confronted with a puppy actually looking at you through the baby blues--after so many days of relating to them with closed eyes.  All of a sudden "there's someone home."
